Hardness, lustre, and streak are aids to identifying minerals. Limestone is composed mainly of the mineral calcite. Calcite has a Mohs hardness of '3', it's lustre is vitreous, and it has a white streak.

These are three (there are many more) properties of minerals that aid in their identification.

  • Luster is the appearance of the surface of the mineral as it reflects light. Greasy, waxy, adamantine, glassy, and metallic are some terms used to describe luster.
  • Streak is the color of a powdered mineral. The streak may be different than the mineral specimens visible color.
  • Hardness (as defined by the Mohs hardness) is the relative ability of a mineral to scratch other minerals on a 1-10 scale, 1 being the softest mineral (talc) and 10 being the hardest mineral (diamond).
