The idea of the American dream is that a person no matter their race, class or ethnicity having the potential and equal opportunity to succeed according to their ability and achievement. It was particuarly big in the 1920's in America.
The American Dream came about the same time as the Declaration of Independence.
The American Dream simply means that anybody, regardless of social background, can make a better life for themselves. As "all men are created equal" and have a right to the "pursuitof happiness"

Though if you are reffering to the type of people who want the dream, it has changed, more and more people have been inspired since the great speech's of Dr. King. Ex: Dream act( illegal students who want to stay in this country), or other foreign peoples.
