Well, if we didn't treat each other humanely, we'd sort of start killing each other. Killing each other = less of us. Less of us = not good. Treating each other humanely is what gave us the ability to evolve into what we are today - because now you can't just go and shoot your boss point blank in the forehead for giving you too much work (though you'd probably want to that anyways, but humane treatment stopped you.)
So, now your boss is alive and well, and you're not in jail, you'll be able to live the rest of your life, and thanks to humane treatment, you and possibly your boss as well, can go on living the rest of your lives, doing great things, seeing your grandchildren, or whatever it is old people like to do.
TLDR: Humane treatment is what made us what we are today, since we didn't just kill whoever for fun, because that whoever may have been doing something that would benefit humanity. And we maintain that now as well, even if people won't do it, but just as a constant reminder.
