A Jew is beaten by highwaymen whilst traveling to Jericho. A priest comes by and rejects his moral duty to help him, and walks on by. A Levite, who is also morally obliged, does the same. A Samaritan, who is despised by Jews, sees the man and helps him recover and also pays for him to stay at an inn.
It contains an excellent lesson for us to follow. It tells us that our neighbors are anyone who needs assistance, and we cannot avoid our own responsibility to be a neighbor.
It is a parable that says that we re saved by Christ alone, not by religion or by "attempting" to keep the law as the two that walked the other side represent. The Inn keeper being is a "pastor" of a Church, the 2 pence is two thousand years for the Church age. We will be rewarded, paid in full by Christ for the service we provide to the Church. The oil is the Holy Spirit and the wine is the Blood of Christ. The good Samaritan is Christ himself.
We can apply this parable in many ways. However I believe this to be the only one meaning.
To show the hypocracy of the (then) current religious ruling class. That the traveler would expect the priests to help him but instead was helped by a Samaritan. In the times of Jesus, Samaritans were considered lower than dogs, good Jews didn't associate with Samaritans.
The importance of this passage for us today is to remember that we should always to show mercy for someone, as you would want someone to show you mercy.
