The three basic food groups are the:
1. Go Food
2. Grow Food
3. Glow Food
Grains are Go foods, they help you run, jump and play all day.
Fruits and vegetables are Glow foods, they help you have shiny hair and sparkly eyes.
Milk and meat & beans are Grow foods, they help you to grow big and strong.
theres only 7 and youre supposed to have a certain balanced ratio of each, depending on your lifestyle,
obviously more meats and proteins for muscle building, carbs for energy, different colored produce renders different benefits on the body, i believe that dairy is for digestive purposes or else i have no clue,
there should be a free class at your local college or health center or wherever you would get your food handlers card that teaches you all about foods and what they do and why they are need more so or less than others.
The purpose of the three food groups is a diet for superior health. It is the three basic whole food groups in which these foods are made for everyone. And will let you have an equal amount of all the nutrients that are required to maintain a health life. It is always important to eat healthy and to use foods out of these three food groups in a daily menu.

A good source of carbohydrates is sourdough bread. A good source of healthy fats is either extra virgin olive oil, or flax seed oil; both contain Omega-3s. A good source of fiber is broccoli. Vitamins and minerals are found in all fruits and vegetables.
