His job is the same as every other player on the field. Keep posession of the ball and find an oppurtunity to score. Many times unskilled or younger teams will just have their deffenders clear the ball but you want to try to score and clearing the ball creates a 50/50 ball down the field and often stops the counter attack. My coaches have always wanted our defenders to try to push forward and take up space, if your opponent lets you carry the ball the whol length of the pitch then take the oppurtunity, and if you see an oppurtunity to pass that would lead to a better chance of the team scoring then pass the ball off. If a deffender does carry the ball up the field someone needs to swing back to cover for him and it could be a number of diffrent players depending on the formation you are playing. Clearing the ball should be a last resort if theres no other option, like in tight spaces around the goal mouth trying to dribble out of the box could create a dangerous situation.
You should pass it to a player who is within reach and has the best chance to freely move forward with the ball.
It is now their possession.
In cases of equal possession the ball goes to the offense.
no you cant otherwise it will be a foul.
In soccer, yes but if you pass the ball to the goalie they can't pick it up
During active play it is possible that no one has possession. In that case, the first player to get to the ball now has possession.
The defenders job is to defend and to see that the ball does not go near the goalkeeper.
A Pass is undertaken when a player having possession the soccer ball (football) moves the ball to another team player in effect Passing the Ball
That would be the team currently in possession of the ball
It all depends on how you touch them, if the goalie has possession, and if the goalie is dribbling the soccer ball.
when the keeper or goalie is in possession of the ball after being received from a back pass or saving a shot
A runner can fumble the ball prior to gaining possession of the football. A receiver must catch and secure the ball, and be deemed a runner before fumbling. If a receiver does not secure the ball, it is considered an incomplete pass instead of a fumble.
