Since 1969, the $100 bill has been the largest Federal Reserve note in circulation.

Before that year, bills valued at $500, $1000, $5,000 and $10,000 could still be obtained from banks although sometimes a special request had to be made because they weren't commonly used. Concerns about the use of high-denomination bills' use to fund criminal activities led to a so-called "soft withdrawal" of those bills. They weren't formally demonetized or recalled, but banks were no longer allowed to provide them to customers. Any that were received on deposit had to be held and returned to the Treasury, so within a few years even the few that were still in circulation were gone.
