Once upon a time, before GPS, sailors spent hours with mathematical tables to work out their position (latitude & longitude) from the angle of the sun or stars above the horizon. If they got it wrong, they might get lost and run out of food, or hit a rock in fog and sink. If the Earth is approximated as a sphere (it's actually a bit flat on top), latitude and longitude can be calculated using spherical geometry. In practice, sailors used tables of precalculated functions, e.g. haversines, and worksheets which reduce the problem to following rules and doing a lot of arithmetic.
It is a mosque, built on the Jewish Temple Mount.
Jeruslam.
the Dome of the Rock
The Dome of the Rock is in the Old City of Jerusalem.
As much as I know, it is the mosque that Isa ( alahissalam) will descend ( on the roof of) before Day of judgement!!!
this is because inside the al-aqsa mosque there is a rock which Muslims believe the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) rose to the heavens.
They don't pray or something, this is just part of El-Aqza mosque that very important to the Muslims, actually the dome of the rock became a symbole for the palestinian and there are alot of houses that use picture of the dome of the rock in front of their houses.
The Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock Shrine.
The "Dome of the Rock" and the rest of the Al Aksa Mosque are located on the Temple Mount, in the 'old city' portion of Jerusalem, in Israel, on the continent of Asia.
The Dome and Al-Aqsa Mosque are both located on the Temple Mount, the site of Solomon's Temple and its successors. The Dome of the Rock was built between AD 685 and 691 by the caliph 'Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan, not as a mosque for public worship but rather as a Mashhad, a shrine for pilgrims.
The Dome of the Rock Shrine and Al-Aqsa Mosque are two holy structures in Islam built on the Haram ash-Sharif or Noble Sanctuary (it is also called the Temple Mount) in the Old City of Jerusalem. The Dome of the Rock is an octagonal structure with a golden copula covered in gold. There is an area for prayer surrounding the Foundation Stone, upon which Muslims believe that Mohammed ascended to heaven. The Al-Aqsa Mosque is directly south of the Dome of the Rock Shrine and is the principle mosque in Jerusalem. Both sights are overseen by the Islamic Waqf, even though the Old City of Jerusalem is under Israeli control.
