The Wilderness was a battle, not a campaign. It was the first battle of the Overland Campaign (May 1864). Lee had won this battle, but Grant did not retreat. He hung on Lee's flank and eventually crowded him into a corner.
Hooker brought a massive army south, hoping to threaten Richmond or bring Lee to open battle where his vastly numerical superiority would crush the Confederates. However, Lee sent Jackson's corps on a flank march, which hit Hooker's right flank like a thunderbolt, rolling the Union right up like a wet blanket. Hooker lost his nerve, and retreated.
The White House and the Washington Monument both flank the Ellipse.
The Battle of the Wilderness was the first battle in the Overland Campaign. Grant lost this battle, but instead of retreating, clung on to Lee's flank, and eventually shunted him into a corner at Petersburg, where he besieged him till he ran out of manpower. (Grant had ended the system of prisoner-exchange).
The word "Flank" means the same in any war - it means the exposed sides of an army/navy vulnerable to attack by the enemy .
The soldiers prepared to flank the enemy from both sides during the battle.
Some tactics used in the second battle of Bull Run were left flank and right flank.
The "flank" when referred to in these terms means the side or sides. Therefore you would be instructed to protect the left or right flank (side) or to protect the flank (both side)
Left side.
The left flank is on the left side between the top of the hip bone and the lowest ribs. It is a place where very little protects the intestines but muscle and fat.
