In their native Australian habitat, if they can stay safe from predators and survive possible habitat loss, sugar gliders have a life expectancy of 10-12 years. Due to predation and other factors, the average is 4-6 years. This is because they are subject to predation by foxes, feral cats, quolls and owls. However, many sugar gliders will safely live out the full term of their natural life.

The potential lifespan for a sugar glider in captivity is 12-15 years. For the captive sugar glider, the most common causes of death seems to be household accidents. This includes things like drowning in the toilet, attacks by other pets, and so on. Another leading cause of death is poor diet, which causes many health problems. Many people that keep sugar gliders as pets, unfortunately, do not take the time to study their diet (which is very complex).
Sugar gliders tend to live for around seven or eight years.

Many websites state they have a lifespan of 4-6 years in the wild, but this is only because they are subject to predation by foxes, feral cats, quolls and owls. Can sugar gliders eat raisins?

Yes, sugar gliders (Petaurus breviceps) eat raisins.Specifically, in the wild, sugar gliders eat insects and small vertebrates and drink the sap of trees in the genuses Eucalyptus and Acacia. In captivity, they need to be fed a very specific diet of which 50 percent is made up fruits and vegetables and 50 percent of protein and insects. As long as the previously listed needs are met, sugar gliders also may be given treats, such as yogurt, whole wheat bread, tofu, raisins, healthy non-sugary cereals, and apple sauce.

Are sugar gliders expensive?

This depends on where you purchase them. The best way to buy them is from a local breeder. I purchased two gray males for $250.00 each. I do not recommend buying them from anyone you see at the mall or a local fair. These companies are just like puppy mills. Many times their gliders are not healthy or even old enough to be sold when they sell them to you. Keep in mind that sugar gliders live a long life and take quite a bit of care. They need fresh fruits and vegetables every day as well as cooked chicken, eggs or yogurt. Supplements and dry pellets also. They also need a large, TALL cage to be happy. But they are awesome pets and love their owners!

It is legal to have sugar gliders in KY but you can not transport them into the state without a permit. To obtain a permit you must have a Vet's office certify that the gliders have a clean bill of health. It is also illegal to release a sugar glider into the wild in KY. You are safe to get one as a pet just as long as you don't plan on releasing it into your backyard.
