It all really depends on usage and type of transmission. Automatics, when not driven hard I have seen usually last till 150k, manual transmission well into the 200k+ range. That being said, since Ford made the differential gears from sintered steel, they are like glass and you can break one on a hard launch with any transmission of any age.
On a 2000 Mercury Cougar : No , only the automatic transaxle ( transmission ) has a dipstick
Mercon V
Dip stick tube
you need a new transmission
it uses Mercon V at transmission fluid. both automatic and manual transmission
my son bought a 1996 cougar that felt like the transmition was slipping and we had the transmission flushed and it fixed it.
The transmission on a 2000 mercury Cougar is on the drivers side. If your planning on removing the tranny, the subframe must be removed. If your wanting to change the filter you are out of luck...it is deep inside the transmission. The pan on the side of the tranny toward the front of the car covers the valve body.
