That may be the longest straight in America, but the world's longest is in Australia. It's about 360 miles long, across the Nullarbor Plain (a flat desert). To counteract the monotony and risk of falling asleep, at one time at least the locomotives where fitted with timers that sounded an alarm every half-hour, and if not cancelled by the driver within a certain time would cut the power.
