1) There isn't really a lowest cost per page printer per se. It is all about the page yield, or the number of pages you get out of a cartridge compared to it's price. Laser printers tend to have a lower cost-per-page number versus ink jets. To find out the cost, divide the retail price by the number of pages it yields. Inkjets tend to produce about 500/cartridge and cost about $25 per cartridge, but can run you about 5 - 6 cents per page depending on what you print. If you have a lot of ink heavy pages, your yield can be a lot lower raising the cost. Laser printers tend to have a per page cost of about 3 - 4 cents, but the cartridges can run about $75 or more, but will last 2,000 pages. Toner heavy pages also tend to not affect the yield too much. When I owned a color laser and printed a lot of graphic heave stuff, the yield was only affected by about 100 pages and in some cases I even got more. Not too mention lasers tend to not move as much as inkjets so they therefore, in my opinion, tend to receive less wear. I have an HP printer myself and like it very much. Trying to find the absolute lowest cost per page printer would be a lot of work, so I wrote this instead to try to provide at least a little insight to help anyone looking to buy a printer. Also remember, you get what you pay for. Also, the cost of 4 inkjets will run you about $100 give or take sales tax, while an $80 toner cartridge which has the same yield of about four combined inkjets, will cost you about $20 - $30 less.
2) Brother laser printers have the lowest price per page. Find a printer that uses the TN-360 cartridge. You can also extend the life of a cartridge significantly by tricking the toner low sensor. Read more here:

The factors that will influence the cost per sheet of any printer are the individual prices of consumables and is, in turn, influenced by the market that you are operating in. The cost per sheet is lower in the United States than in Europe as the consumables (paper, toner, drum, etc) are cheaper to acquire in the United States. Having said that, technical reviews frequently calculate cost per page, usually for the United States market and typically arrive at a cost around 1 to 4 cents per sheet for a black and white page and 10 to 20 cents per sheet for a color page.
Inkjet printers are more costly in the long run, costing about 2 to 7 cents per page, whereas laser printers cost less at around 1.6 to 3 cents per page.

inkjet Inkjets and Laserjets each come with their own pros and cons. Inkjets are cheaper up front, but they have a higher cost per page due to the high price for ink. Laserjets on the otherhand cost a lot up front, but their cost per page is quite low. Businesses tend to use laserjets due to the cost effective nature. It will cost more to start out with, but in the long run you will be better off with a laserjet.
