The abdominal aorta (and inferior vena cava for that matter) is a primary retroperitoneal structure.

The abdominal aorta splits at about the lumbosacral joint into two common iliac arteries.
The renal artery is off to the side of the abdominal aorta, supplying and carrying a large portion of total blood to the kidneys. The helium is located above and behind the lung, and is where the pulmonary artery, superior and inferior pulmonary veins, lymphatic vessels, and bronchus with bronchial veins and arteries enter and exit.
The main collecting duct for the lymphatic system is the thoracic duct located alongside the aorta in the thoracic region of the body. Most lower body lymph (lymph from the front and back of both legs and the abdominal area) migrate to the thoracic duct then from the duct, lymph dumps into the left subclavian vein. The lymph then becomes part of the vascular system and the lymphatic process starts all over again.
