The deltoid is a thick triangular muscle which covers the shoulder. It has three heads the Clavicular (anterior) fibres, the acromial (lateral fibres), and the spinal (posterior) fibres.

These fibres each contribute to different actions but the overall movements they allow according to their positions are:

Abduction of the arm above the first 15 degrees (this 15 degrees is performed by the supraspinatus muscle).

The muscle also contributes to flexion, medial rotation, extension and lateral rotation.

The main action is the abduction of the arm above 15 degrees.
