A sensory neuron carries messages from the body's sense receptors (such as your mouth, nose, fingers, etc...) to the relay neurons. The relay neurons then send the signal along the spinal cord up to the brain. After the brain has processed the information, the relay neurons run the signal down to the motor neurons, which are the neurons that affect the muscle's movements.

For example, whenever you stub your toe, the pain signal shoots from your toe up to the relay neurons via sensory neurons goes to your brain then goes back down your body and reaches your toe. This is when you feel the pain. Just imagine, this all happens in a fraction of a second.

The purpose of the sensory nerve fibers is to send signals from the sense organs to the central nervous system. This keeps the brain well informed as to what is going on so the brain can help prevent pain and burns.

Sensory neurons are typically classified as the neurons responsible for converting external stimuli from the environment into internal stimuli. They are activated by sensory input (vision, touch, hearing, etc.), and send projections into the central nervous system that convey sensory information to the brain or spinal cord. Unlike neurons of the central nervous system, whose inputs come from other neurons, sensory neurons are activated by physical modalities such as light, sound, and temperature.

What is the function of relay neuron?

A relay neuron is the neuron that picks up the message from the sensory neuron and delivers it to the motor neuron in the spinal cord then to the brain.

What is mixed neuron?

Mixed nerve is a nerve that carry all the motor function, sensory function and the autonomic function in a single fiber. Spinal nerve is the example of the mixed nerve. Some of the Cranial nerve on the other hand is not the mixed nerve as it only has one property which is either sensory or motor function. http://www.answers.com/main/ntquery?s=spinal+nerve&gwp=13
