Topic Sentence
The main idea of a paragraph is what that specific paragraph is about. You have a main idea of the whole writing, but each paragraph (or "passage") has its own main idea, or main point, and each paragraph expands on the whole.
The elements of paragraphs are the main point or subject, sentences or statements to explain the main point, and a conclusion sentence. A paragraph should be about only one subject and paragraphs should be arranged in the body of the writing in a chronological order.
A supporting body of a paragraph provides evidence, examples, or explanations that develop the main idea or topic sentence. It reinforces the main point by offering details and information that help to clarify or strengthen the argument or point being made in the paragraph.
A paragraph with two main topics is often referred to as a dual-topic paragraph. It presents information about two distinct subjects within the same paragraph.
A coherent body paragraph is a paragraph in an essay or piece of writing that develops a single main idea or point in a clear and logical manner. It includes a topic sentence that introduces the main idea, supporting sentences that provide evidence or examples to support the main idea, and a concluding sentence that reinforces the main point. The ideas within the paragraph should be organized and presented in a way that flows smoothly and logically from one to the next.
