UC Berkeley's (aka Cal) mascot is the Oski the Bear. Oski the Bear (costumed Bear) was introduced as Berkley's official mascot on September 26, 1941. Prior to this date, live bears were used as mascots.
The mascot is the Golden Bear which i believe is directly related to the fact that the Grizzly Bear is the state animal and both look exactly the same and that UC Berkeley was the first UC in the state.

In 1846, the California State flag was conceived with a grizzly bear, representative of the many bears in the state. The state's nickname is The Golden State. The University of California at Berkeley then adopted the Golden Bear as it's mascot.
