What is the maximum dose of vicodin that's safe per day?

Vicodin 5/500 max dose is 8 tablets/day. This is based on the acetaminophen portion of Vicodin (The maximum dose of acetaminophen is 4 g per day). Hydrocodone by itself does not have an established maximum dose. This doesn't mean that you can't overdose on it, it just means that each patient's response is different, some will begin to experience toxicity before others, some will need more to alleviate pain.

It depends more on the amount of Tylenol/Acetaminophen in the Vicoden than the hydrocodone. Tylenol/Acetaminophen damage your liver and kidneys over time and the amount that can cause damage is variable from person to person. I have heard that doctors prescribe a max dosage of 1500-2000mg acetaminophen for people with chronic pain per day. My personal opinion, though, is that this dosage over extended amounts of time (younger people with longer time left to take it) would cause damage to the liver and/or kidneys. If you feel that you must take larger dosages and are accustomed to doing so, consider using luke warm water and a coffee strainer to filter out the acetomenophen. Drink the liquid, which should be almost pure hydrocodone, although the yield will be a bit less (also, remember that hydrocodone overdose is still a possibility in higher dosages).
