A polygamous family is one in which one man who is married to several women at the same time, and the wives and their children are aware of this.

Sometimes a man will marry several women but make each think she is his only wife. Then a polygamous family has not been created, and the man is merely a polygamist.

An extended family is one which consists of parents, children, grand children and sometimes the sisters, brothers, nieces and nephews of the parents. Sometimes extended families live near each other, but most often modern extended families live some distance apart and come together only during formal reunions, special holidays gatherings, and for marriages and funerals. A polygamous family is one in which one person has more than one spouse at the same time. The two best known forms are polygyny (one man having more than one wife), or as polyandry (one woman having more than one husband). A polygamous family is one in which the spouses and their children live together and operate as a large family unit.
