First of all it is Not the Austrian national anthem! ( you:d be surprised) song does express national feelings- without martial elements ( no bombs bursting in air) this is unusual, but one can argue God Bless America is an essentially non-martial Patriotic song. From what I understand, Edelweiss- which means Noble White ( a flower) is either A. a folk song of Austrian origin which was adapted for the play ( Sound of Music) or B. a commercial song written specifically for the play and later movie. I don"t like it. I can"t imagine how a rare product of the botanical kingdom could be said to ( Bless my Homeland forever!) maybe a Bald Eagle, or for that matter, a Siberian Tiger, but a passive plant? it doesn:t Grok- that"s just my opinion. I saw the Play back in c. l962 and ( it was my first stage play I saw) it turned me off like a dead battery. music- some of it exquisite- some of it stagey- but very little comedy- except for some (Mickey Mouse) stuff of kids jumping up on stairs in the beginning- in a sort of role call. I didn"t like it.
Raindrops and ROSES and blue satin sashes. That would be Edelweiss, not roses.
The lyrics to Edelweiss are (in verses): Edelweiss, Edelweiss, every morning you greet me. Small and White, clean and bright, you look happy to meet me. Blossom of snow may you bloom and grow. Bloom and grow forever. Edelweiss, Edelweiss, bless my homeland forever.
