House of the Scorpion is a story about new technology used in a wrong way, or used in a way we as a society cannot yet fully comprehend. It's about how out-of-control things get when you change genetics, how quickly scientific advances surpass our daily morals and values.

It is also a story of loyalty, and friendship. Protecting those you love and realizing the self control to not harm those you don't. It's about learning from your mistakes and always staying honest. It's about how human nature can overcome all of the odds as long as we put our minds to it.

Another Answer:

House of the Scorpion is about being who you are in a world that doesn't respect you. It is about friendship love, and understanding yourself.

I think it's about living in a world that sees you as someone different, and trying to overcome that intolerance and be respected and loved by others.

The main idea of the book House of the Scorpion is that rich people could afford to have clones of themselves made. They did this to be able to harvest organs from these clones. However Matt was given arsenic to make him unable to be used as a clone.
