To tithe is to give 10% of ones possessions, usually to a Church as to give it to God. The purpose of the tithe has always been to take care of the people working for the Church. It began in the Old Testament for the nation of Israel. The Levites and Priests only worked in the Temple, and so they were dependent on getting their food and other necessities from others in the nation giving what they had. This has carried on because now pastors usually take care of the church full time, and so they need money to survive and to pay bills for the church to keep the building in order.

The concept behind tithing is that, since all that we get is only because The Lord allowed us to have it, we should be willing to give 1/10 of it back to take care of those doing his work.

In Christianity, a tithe is a Biblical tradition of giving 10% of your weekly income to the church. The Bible mentions the importance of tithing a few times in Malaki, Deuteronomy, and Leviticus. Normally, churches have designated people who are responsible for the finances and who are in charge of delegating how the money is spent. For the most part, tithes go towards supporting missionaries, maintenance, outreach, and some church employees' salaries. When giving a tithe, a church member has the opportunity to choose where they want their tithe to go.

In the Bible Abraham obeyed the law of the (pagan) land and gave tithes of spoils of war to his local king-priest.

In the Law the holy tithe was always only food from inside Israel which God had miraculously increased from His holy land. Tithes could not come from the increase of man's hands or from outside Israel.

The Church cannot give a true biblical holy tithe today even if it wanted to do so. Jesus only taught tithing as matters of the law. The Church is commanded to give freely, generously and sacrificially but is not commanded to teach tithing according to Numbers 18:21-28. Neither are its leaders required to NOT own property as were tithe-receiving OT Levites.
