I looked up VALE, and as my education included LATIN, thought it may BE such. However; in LATIN the Latin "V" is pronounced like an English "U" as that is what it IS. Maybe English can be restored and use LATIN where is is supposed to be and sound so.

VALE in English is taken from the LATIN VALE but in in Latin the "V" is pronounced like a "U-ber" and so is a high "U", not a V as in Very.

Where does the phrase passed away originate and what does it mean?

it originated because people found it too difficult to say "is dead". It is an English expression. ___ Hardly. The original phrase was 'passed on' i.e. they have passed through this vale of tears and into Heaven. This became 'passed away'. In turn this has given way to the recent, and deeply irritating, Americanism 'passed'. Which to me always sounds like someone's just successfully completed an exam.
