Exactly what it sounds like. A hip bone is taken out, through surgery of course, and then is replaced with a prostetic. My mom's 'new' hip is made of titanium.

A bone conserving alternative to a Total Hip Replacement (THR) is hip resurfacing. The Birmingham Hip Resurfacing (BHR) is a bone conserving implant aimed at young active patients who want there quality of life back!
Instead of replacing the old worn out joint, a BHR resurfaces the femoral head with a Cobalt-Chrome component and inserts a Cobalt-Chrome cup into the acetabular socket. This metal on metal technique last longer and has less wear than the traditional Metal on Plastic THR.
By conserving the bone at the femoral head, revisions should they be needed are much simplier than they are if a THR has been carried out at first.
The BHR was pioneered by Derek McMinn in Birmingham, UK. The implant has a high success rate currently at 97% at 13 years which compared to similar statistics for a THR, the difference is staggering. See McMinn Centre website for more details!
Hip replacement treatments and procedures are often suggested due to damage caused by osteoarthritis or injuries that limit a person's range of motion, mobility, and comfort. Hip replacement surgeries tend to minimally invasive surgical procedures that are often recommended after bone scans, MRIs, x-rays and ultrasound determine the extent of damage to bones in hip joints. You can see the link at the resource box.
Hip replacement surgery is also called total hip arthroplasty (joint + repair + procedure). During this invasive surgery, the diseased hip joint is replaced with a prosthesis (artificial joint) made of metal or ceramics. They are made to be acceptable to the body and to resist corrosion, degradation and wear.
Hip replacement surgery replaces the part of the hip causing discomfort with a prothesis - typically a multi-faceted device that has a steel ball and plastic socket.

Hip resurfacing or total hip replacement
Hip Replacement or hip arthroplasty is a surgical procedure to treat the damaged portion of the hip. A person who performs this procedure by making certain incisions to remove the damaged part of the hip and replacing them with prosthetic implants is a Hip Replacement surgeon.
If you need a hip replacement, then age is not an issue.

A replacement hip should not be squeaking. Contact your surgeon regarding this. There may be a recall on the replacement hip, or there may be a more simple solution. Do not assume that this is normal.
Hip arthroplasty is a hip replacement. Arthropathy is any joint disease.
Although they are both hip-related surgical procedures, hip replacement and revision have distinct functions: 1. Primary Hip Replacement (Hip Replacement): Hip replacement, sometimes referred to as hip arthroplasty, is a surgical technique in which prosthetics or artificial implants are used to replace the diseased or damaged portions of the hip joint. This treatment is usually used for individuals who have hip fractures, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, or other disorders that cause discomfort in order to enhance hip function and restore mobility. Hip replacement surgery involves the removal of the hip joint's deteriorated cartilage and bone in favor of prosthetic metal, plastic, or ceramic components. 2. Hip Replacement (Revision Hip Revision): The process of implanting a new hip prosthesis in place of an old one is known as hip revision surgery. When a primary hip replacement wears out, fails, or develops an infection over time, it is frequently required. Revision surgery may be necessary due to implant misalignment, wear and tear on the artificial joint, infection, fracture, or loosening of the prosthetic components. There are three primary kinds of hip replacement surgery: Total hip replacement (THR): This procedure entails the artificial replacement of the hip joint's ball and socket. Partial hip replacement (hemiarthroplasty): Hemiarthroplasty, often known as partial hip replacement, involves solely replacing the ball part of the hip joint with a prosthetic element. Hip resurfacing: As opposed to total hip replacement, this procedure preserves more of the original bone by using a metal prosthesis to cover the damaged surfaces of the hip joint.
