Hepatic.

"Hep" is the medical prefix that means liver. If not using the word liver, we use the word "hepatic" to describe something pertaining to the liver, such as hepatic function panel (a lab test to evaluate the function of the liver) or hepatitis (an inflammation or infection of the liver). The terms "hep-" and "hepatic" are from the Greek hepar, meaning liver. For example:

  • hepatic ~ pertains to the liver,
  • hepatitis ~ infection or inflammation of the liver, "itis" is infection or inflammation, which can be acute or chronic, can be due to bacteria, viruses, or due to toxins (such as alcohol).
  • hepatomegaly ~ enlarged liver.

Examples of other terms related to the liver, liver function and associated with the liver are:

  • acute or chronic hepatic failure ~ liver is not working,
  • liver cirrhosis ~ chronic disorder of the liver in which fibrous tissue and nodules replace normal tissue, interfering with blood flow and normal function, can be related to alcohol consumption, but there are also other causes,
  • gallbladder ~ Cholecyst-, "chole-" refers to gall/bile, "-cyst-" means bladder. The gallbladder is the organ that holds and releases into the intestines the bile that the liver produces for proper digestion,
  • hypercoagulable state ~ "hyper-" means too much, "-coag-" means clot, when the body over-produces blood clots due to malfunction in the liver's production of clotting factors,
  • cholecystectomy ~ "-ectomy" means removal, i.e., removal of gallbladder,
  • cholelithiasis ~ gall stone, "-lith-" means stone, presence of gallstones,
  • choledocolithiasis ~ "-lith-" means stone, "-doco-" refers to a duct, e.g. bile duct, presence of a gallstone in the bile duct,
  • icterus/jaundice ~ yellowing of the whites of the eyes or skin caused by build up of bile in the body,
  • portal hypertension ~ condition of elevated pressure (hypertension) in the portal vein (major liver vein), which can damage the liver, leading to liver failure and one of the most common reasons for liver transplants,
  • toxin/toxic ~ chemicals or other waste products that can be harmful to the body when the liver is not filtering the blood correctly, e.g., Tylenol (acetaminophen) is very toxic to the liver,
  • hemochromatosis ~ "hemo-" means blood, "-chrom-" means color, "-tosis" means condition of, a genetic disorder that allows the body to accumulate more iron than needed causing a buildup of iron in tissues and organs, which causes an increase in skin pigmentation that makes them look "bronze" colored. Eventually, that iron overload can lead to failure of the liver and other major organs,
  • allograft ~ transplant of tissue, such as liver, from one person to another,
  • cholesterol ~ a steroid made in the liver that is essential to making bile to digest fats, making Vitamin D, progesterone, estrogens, testosterone, corticosterone, and cortisol hormones.
  • immuno-suppresion ~ induced state of malfunction of the immune system, sometimes produced with medications in transplant patients to prevent their immune system from rejecting the organ through auto-immune processes (body attacks itself or its organs because they are not recognized as part of the body anymore).

These are only a very few terms used in talking about the liver or liver disorders in medical terminology. See the related links below for more prefixes, suffixes and root words based on Latin and Greek that are combined to make medical terms.
