Reality.

The tourists do not get to know what the city is really like. All they see are the good things, the "patient skylines" and "iconic monuments", not the "roaches or rats". They think they have seen reality, but they haven't. And because they haven't, they were not able to help. They were impressed with a city, but not the real one.
