Barium is in Group 2, so we know that it makes 2+ ions. If you happen to have a chart of common polyatomic ions, you can find out that phosphate is PO4 and has a 3- charge. So, to even out the charges, we need to get three barium ions and two phosphate ions. Now, the total positive charge (from the barium ions) is 6+, and the total negative charge (from the phosphate ions) is 6-.

We see that Ba3(PO4)2 is the chemical formula for barium phosphate.

the empirical mass of barium phosphate (Ba3(PO4)2) is 601.93 g/mol. To find the molar mass, you would need to balance the formula this compound is in. If there is no coefficient in front of this chemical formula once it has been balanced, the molar mass of barium phosphate is 601.93 g/mol as well. If it has, for say, a 2 in front of it once the formula has been balanced, you would multiply the empirical mas by 2 to get the molar mass of1203.86 g/mol (601.93 g/mol x 2). empirical mass x coefficient = molar mass

Ba+2 PO4+3 <--- these are the ions and their charges

Ba+2 Ba+2 Ba+2 PO4+3 PO4+3 <---- the charges have to add up to zero, so three +2 barium ions cancel out two +3 phosphate ions

Ba3(PO4)2 <---- simplify
