The brown shingles rotted with moss and ivy, big black french doors with a rusty knocker. All leaving an eerie felling in the air near the old Westing mansion. Neighboring this extremely spooky residence are the Sunset Towers, a modern apartment building. In the novel, The Westing Game, the setting takes place on the outskirts of a place called Westingtown. The two main locations are in the newly built Sunset Towers, and the old, abandoned Westing estate. The Westing household is isolated, empty, and dark, it has been abandoned since before the novel began. On the other hand, the newly built sunset towers are full of people, but still a hint of mystery lurks in the air like smoke from a campfire. As stated int he text,"Turtle squinted into the blackness that lay within the open French doors. Open, as though someone or some Thing was expecting her." This quote perfectly describes the Westing house's outer decor.Ellen Raskin makes even the outside seem scary, I can't imagine how Turtle felt when first entering the scary mansion all alone off into the vast unknown of ghosts and other creepy figures. All in all, the setting of my novel is in a newly built apartment building, and a frightening, old mansion.

This hair -raising setting definately creates a mood unlike any other. The tone in the story is seen by the reader very easily in the novel. To me it came off as scary, mysterious, with a hint of light air when the heirs are not fiercely competing. Like at the dinner party for example, they all had fun laughing and talking until the second bomb went off!
