All of the fluid in semen is what keeps the sperm alive, in total the sperm itself only makes up about 10% of the fluid .

Basically the fluid provides transport, nutrients and chemicals to keep the sperm alive until it reaches the cervix and fertilizes the egg. It will die eventually tho; inside a woman it can live for up to 5 days but outside only a matter of minutes or hours.

If you want to get into the science of it then:

The seminal fluid contains:

- prostoglandins, an acid which decreases the thickness of vaginal fluid so the sperm can travel more easily.

- the sugar "fructose" which provides the energy for them to move.

- a coagulation enzyme so the individual sperm cells can stick to the vaginal walls before they build up the energy to travel to the cervix.

- the hormone "relaxin" which enhances sperm mobility.

Hope that's what you're after.
