The name of the stick that is used in a relay race is called a baton. However it has a nick name of a "Sprinter's Stick" also.

A relay race is a race in which a baton is handed from runner to runner until the baton eventually makes it all the way around the track. Each runner carries the baton a measure, and then hands it off to the next runner.
One technique of a relay race is to have the person receiving the baton start running before the person handing off the baton. That way, the baton never stops being in motion.
Yes u can throw the beton AFTER the race
A relay is a race in which there are several runners in a team and they all run a short distance with a baton and pass this baton to the next team member who runs the next length with it. The fastest team round the circuit wins. There is much skill in handing the baton over without losing speed (or dropping it!).

It is correctly called the 4x800 meter relay. It's when 4 runners each take turns running the 800 meter in a race (two laps around the track) by using a baton to pass to each other.
