Roman Catholic AnswerThe celebration of the Eucharist is commonly referred to as the Mass.Eucharist is a Greek word for Thanksgiving. It repeats a scene in an upper room in a house in Jerusalem following a Passover meal. Different denominations have different procedures but all follow a basic pattern. At Passover Jews frequently set a place and have an extra cup of wine for a drop in visitor. That is for the expected return of the prophet Elijah. Jesus had a disciple ask a man where should the teacher and his disciples eat the passover? The man showed the disciple a large upper room. The man provided Jesus and the disciples a Lamb, bitter herbs, matzo, and a large cup of wine. The disciples ate the lamb and the other vegetables. Then after the supper, Jesus took the matzo and broke it and passed it to his disciples and said, "This is my body, broken for you." and ordered them to eat it. Sometimes the bread is passed out after those words are spoken and sometimes later. Then he took Elijah's cup, "This is my blood, shed for you." Then he ordered them to drink it. Then the wine (or Grape Juice) is passed out. (The bread is also passed out at this time if it has not already been passed out.) Then the scripture says, "After they sang a hymn, they departed." Then they sing a hymn. There are usually prayers involved as well.
The Eucharist is the eating of the bread and the drinking of the wine to remember that Jesus died for us. Jesus told his diciples directly to do this to remember him. In most denominations the bread and wine are just symbols of Jesus' body and blood whereas in Roman Catholicism the bread and wine become the actual physical body and blood of Jesus. In most denominations only the priest/vicar of the church is allowed to conduct the Eucharist, only the priest drinks the wine in the Roman Catholic church, due to the importance of the ceremony. In the methodist church the minister or priest is not always the one who conducts the ceremony as another less authoritive church member may conduct the ceremony. That's what you asked for.
The Church celebrates the Eucharist. The Eucharist is another name of Our Blessed Lord, Jesus Christ, in the Blessed Sacrament, it also refers to the Mass, in which Our Blessed Lord becomes physically present in the Most Holy Eucharist, and offers Himself to the Father for our salvation. The Eucharist, then, above all, is a celebration of Our Blessed Lord, and His Mystical Body, which is the Church. Thus, all true Christians celebrate the Eucharist, by attending Mass.
The Celebration of the Eucharist (properly called the Liturgy of the Eucharist or Mass of the Faithful) is celebrated during Mass; the portion of the Mass called the Liturgy of the Eucharist or Mass of the Faithful is from the Presentation of the Gifts until the Great Amen.
The celebration of the Most Holy Eucharist is also called the Divine Liturgy in the East, or the Mass in the West. It is the source and summit of the Christian life. (Lumen Gentium 11). It is the re-presentation of Christ's death on the cross.
