In Protestant and evangelical churches it is usually called the 'communion table'; in Roman Catholic churches, the 'altar'.
This difference is because Catholic teaching views the bread and wine as a re-presentation of the same sacrifice of Christ at Calvary, with the elements changing substance to the real body and blood of Christ in every respect except appearance; hence the table is an 'altar' of sacrifice.
In Protestant traditions since the Reformation the elements of bread and wine are viewed in a variety of other ways, including those which emphasise their symbolic and memorial nature, or to be the occasion of a real but spiritual presence of Christ; hence 'communion table' rather than 'altar'.
'Higher' forms of Protestant churches, including those in the 'Anglo-Catholic' tradition, place a premium on Catholic continuity, and are closer in practice, doctrine and terminology to the Roman Catholic position.
Without taking note of the distinctions above 'altar' has become part of popular usage, especially in terms like 'altar call'.

Roman Catholic AnswerThe most important of the sacred signs in the Church are the sacraments.
Most members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (commonly called the "Mormon" Church) would probably be a little confused at this question. The word "sacred" is more often used than "holy" in the Church. Things that Church members consider sacred or holy might include: The Temple: There are currenly 130 operating temples worldwide. Temples are considered sacred buildings and are dedicated to God. They are separate from the common church meetinghouses used for Sunday worship. In temples, worthy Church members can participate in the most sacred ordinances and covenants offered in the Church. It is also a place where one escape the world and quietly commune with God. similarly, Temple Ordinances and Garment: Church members consider the ordinances received in the temple to be extrememly sacred. They do not talk about them outside the walls of the temple and are extremely offended when they are mocked. Those who have received the ordinances wear a garment at all times as a reminder of the covenants made. The garment is also considered sacred. Church members try to avoid it's touching the ground or being shown to others. The Scriptures, including the Bible, Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants, and Pearl of Great Price are considered the sacred word of God. While the books themselves are not generally treated as sacred objects, as they are in some religions (such as Islam and Sikhism), the words contained in them are sacred. The body and life are also considered sacred. Church members advocate virtue, chastity, and modesty because the body is a sacred creation and gift from God. They oppose abortion and abuse because life is also a sacred gift.

There is no set sacred building of Christianity. Most people would answer this question with the answer "the Church". But the church is simply a building that the people gather at for worship. I would say a more correct answer would be the human that has Christ Jesus living in their heart, that is the temple of the Lord. The human that contains the Holy Spirit inside of them is the "building" that represents the holy God that Christians serve.
