The allies often (incorrectly) referred to it as the "Schmeisser", after weapons designer Hugo Schmeisser - who had nothing to do with the production of the MP40.

It was also referred to as the "Burp Gun" sometimes, due to the noise the blowback action caused (like a long burp instead of a steady rat-a-tat).
