A "major" is an area of study where a student concentrates most heavily and takes the most courses or course-hours, usually with the intent of getting a job in that field. Schools normally specify a minimum number of courses/hours to be considered as a major. A "minor" is an area of study that a student may take a smaller number of courses but still concentrate in that area. Again, schools often specify the number of courses/hours required for a minor. These are distinguished from courses that may be required for basic knowledge but aren't in sufficient concentration to qualify for major or minor credit. An example would be a chemistry major who is required to take a course in German in order to read German research papers using a dictionary, but who doesn't take enough courses to be able to read or speak the language in general. A minor may or may not be related to the major area. For example, a math major may take several physics courses in addition to concentrating in mathematics. The number of physics classes may not be enough to count as a second major but are sufficient for minor credit.

The required courses are specific to your major. Each major will have course requirements particular to themselves.
