Each state gets two Senators, regardless of size.
The House membership is determined by the size of the population of each state. It is one of the reasons the US conducts a Census every ten years.

The total number of House of Representatives allowed is 435 members. The total number of Senate members is 2 per state and with 50 states that is 100 Senate members.

There are two members per state in the Senate and they serve six years per term. The Senate was first convened in 1789.

Some Founding Fathers feared being dominated by states with large populations, while others feared being dominated by sparsely populated states, so this was a compromise..it gives BOTH groups a voice
