Library automation i think refers to the Integrated Library System(ILS). Which is used to speed up administrative tasks such as checking out book through the use of automated checkout stations that allow library users to scan their library cars and than scan the bar code of the materials they are checking out by themselves.

The ILS does other functions such as tracking the books in the library and relating to the Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC ) such as if it is on the self of checked out through the use of Radio Frequency Identification tags

It is need to speed up the process of checking in and out materials and listing if it is on the shelf or not. It is used to free up staff and so that not as amny staff members are needed.

It enables records to be easily searched for. That is using an automated library system will allow the library to easily locate the shelf where a textbook is kept, searched for it throught the author that textbook and wheather it is available (in cases where textbooks can be rented). It can also be used for easy library registration, so that data redundancy can be reduced in case someone losts his libray card. It can also be used to check library deforters.
