A double-blind study means that neither the test subject (human) or the researcher administering the study knows whether the test subject is receiving the experimental treatment or the control treatment. A control sample or control group is used to compare with the experimental group or sample. The control sample ideally, should be exactly the same as the experimental sample except that you don't give your experimental treatment to the control sample. Afterwards you compare the 2 samples to see if your experimental treatment had any kind of effect. The control is like a reference point.
Control groups are non-experimental groups -- that is, they have not been subjected to the experimental treatment. For example, if you are testing a new drug, the experimental group (also called the "treatment group") gets the drug, and the control group does not.Control groups are necessary in order to show that the treatment causes an effect. If the experimental group shows changes, but the control group does not, then it is possible that those changes were caused by the treatment. If there is no control group, then there is nothing to compare the experimental group to.Additionally, a control group is usually given an equivalent treatment. In the drug study, the control group would receive a placebo, such as a sugar pill. In such cases, control groups may be called placebo groups. The control group is necessary to know if the factor being tested is making a difference in the experimental group. Both should be subject to the same conditions, except for the one condition or factor being tested on the experimental group. Differences between the outcomes of the two groups, good or bad, can then be attributed to the one factor that is different. Without the control, it would be most difficult to tell what the factor being tested had done, because it's not really possible to tell what would have happened without it.
