A Dark Age.

The word which most accurately characterizes the opposite of "enlighten" is "obscure". The word "enlighten" is characterized by revealing or making known, while the word "obscure" is characterized by hiding or keeping hidden. The phrase "a dark age" is incorrect, because it speaks to a time-period known as the "enlightenment" and there is no time-period associated with the word "enlighten".

Darkness/ ignorance. Plato wrote a story called the Allegory of the Cave about a man sitting in complete darkness, but God came along and put him in the light (Enlightenment) . At first he was blinded by the light, but as he got use to the light he saw things he never saw before. Then, God came back and put him back in the darkness, but this time man knew what he needed and what he missed in life.
