The answer to this would vary depending upon the subject and even the teacher. The minimum length seems to be about 40-45 minutes; any less and there is no time to do anything in depth. The maximum time for academic subjects depends upon whether block teaching is employed. Under a conventional schedule, 55-60 minutes is the usual maximum length that is helpful. So the short answer is: 45-55 minutes is probably optimal, assuming there is a passing period (normally 3-5 minutes) allowed between lessons, or 50-60 minutes without a passing period.

Subjects such as orchestra or crafts, for which there is considerable set-up and break-down time, may do well with 60-90 minute lessons.

In some schools, for example the Waldorf schools, certain subjects are taught in intensive blocks. The lessons for these subjects are much longer, usually between one and two hours long. After a few intensive weeks exploring one subject, students switch to another subject. For example, they may have a block of physics followed by a block of English. This approach allows for much more in-depth work.

Artistic subjects, and occasionally foreign languages, are also sometimes taught in blocks.

As far as I know there has never been a systematic study of the difference lesson length makes. I personally love a mixed system, with block teaching for one subject that students can really get their teeth into, followed by 45-55 minute lessons for skills classes.
