The origin of trivia as meaning unimportant facts, or general knowledge, came from roman times. The area outside the senate was called the trivium. When politicians were outside the main building they had to avoid discussing important matters as there were eavesdroppers. They could only discuss unrelated matters, which became known as trivia after the trivium in which they were discussed.
