Cyril Damien invented the accordion in 1829 and is also known as the squeezebox or melodeon.
The British inventor Wheatstone took the idea of free reeds from Chinese instruments (like the Sheng and Gusheng) brought back during the time of the British Empire half way through the 1800s. He transfered the bamboo free reeds into metal and with a bit of work invented the concertina and melodeon. It wasn't too long after this that the piano and button accordions were invented in Germany, although no-one's quite sure where or who.
The accordion is part of the free reed instrument family. This means that it has reeds mounted in it that sound when air blows over them. The first instrument in the family was the Chinese Sheng. Other instruments that are related to the accordion include the harmonica, the concertina, the melodeon, and the bandoneon.
The origin of the word is Italian (concetare). Meaning a composition for an orchestra with one or more solo instruments

In Ireland, a melodeon refers to a single row musical instrument with the bass buttons while in the United States these instruments are often referred to as accordions.
