An oracle had a prophecy that Oedipus would kill his father, king of Thebes, and marry his mother.
Oedipus is outraged at Tiresias' prophecy. He thinks Tiresias is lying to him and was "put up" to telling him that by Creon. Oedipus is so furious with Tiresias, that in the process he pushes Tiresias into making another prophecy (more of a premonition) that Oedipus will be blind.

Oedipus would be born to King Laius and Queen Jocasta of the royal house of Thebes. He would grow up to kill his father and marry his mother and so bring disaster on the city of Thebes.
"Oedipus Tyrannus" and "Oedipus the King" are two titles by which the play "Oedipus Rex" also is known.Specifically, "Oedipus Tyrannus" is the play's original title by ancient Greek playwright Sophocles (495 B.C.E. - 405 B.C.E.). "Oedipus Rex" is the title that is given to the Latin translation of the original Greek play. "Oedipus the King" is the title to the English translation.

By trying to evade the prophecy, Oedipus, unwittingly causes it to occur.
This is definitely a school question. Laius, the old king before Oedipus took the throne in Sophocles' tragedy, was told by the oracle that . . . one should do one's own work. For those who really need to/want to know, Oedipus killed Laius. And Laius was his father. Reverse engineer the prophecy.
That the crime scene, time and victims are similar to those of Oedipus' own past is the reason why Jocasta's account of the prophecy about her child and of her husband's death upset Oedipus in "Oedipus Rex" by Sophocles (495 B.C.E. - 405 B.C.E.).Specifically, Theban King Oedipus kills an older version of himself along with all but one of the victim's escort at the Delphi-Daulia intersection just before moving to Thebes. The appearance and number of victims, the location of the killings and the time overlap with Queen Jocasta's description of her first husband King Laius' murder. Neither one seems to notice the identical prophecy given to Jocasta about her infant son to that given to her second husband, Oedipus, who is young enough to be her son.
The shepherd reveals Oedipus's identity, and he is finally convinced that the prophecy came trueD.The shepherd reveals Oedipus's identity, and he is finally convinced that the prophecy came true.
Oedipus got his name from his guarding parents. Oedipus means "swollen foot" because his original parents wanted to void a prophecy that he would kill his father and marry his mother. His parents stuck a rod through his legs then sent him to a mountain top to be left. His new parents gave the name Oedipus(swollen foot).
Though Oedipus tried to avoid his fate, the prophecy was still fulfilled.
Oedipus ran into his father at a crossroads and was able to kill his father in combat. In this way, Oedipus fulfilled the prophecy that caused Oedipus's father to abandon him in the first place.
