The core of the Earth is made of a mixture of nickel and iron; the inner core is solid and the outer core is liquid. These metals sank to the core because they are of denser material than the surrounding mantle, which is composed mainly of ultramafic silicate minerals that are solid which can flow due to the heat, that allow them to slowly move and transfer heat to the exterior of the planet. The very thin crust is composed of solid and brittle igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rock.
