Strictly speaking "giri" means duty, obligation and "ninjo" means humanity (literally: human feeling.) The words together, giri ninjo, usually refer to a conflict between what one wishes and what society demands. It figures in about 60% of Japanese TV drama and in fact the words "giri ninjo" refer to that entire genre. e.g. Kimura loves Suzuki and would like to marry and leave the backwaters of Kagoshima. However, as eldest daughter she remain and care for sickly Obachan. Will Kimura abandon her filial duty in pursuit of true love? Heck, these TV shows write themselves.
