Generally nuclear reactions create a lot of heat and light since matter turns into energy, according to E=mc2 In addition to these, nuclear reaction emits 3 basic types of radioactivity: alpha, beta and gamma rays.

  • Alpha is actually a beam of particles that are the 4He2 nucleuses. They don't usually have very much kinetic energy, which is why they don't travel very far in air. One particle carries +2 charge and can be stopped by a piece of paper.
  • Beta contains electrons. Since electrons are lighter, they have greater kinetic energy, thus they travel further. One particle carries -1 charge. Beta particles go through thinner materials but will be stopped by metals.
  • Gamma rays are not material but energetic. They are electromagnetic waves that have the greatest permeability of all of the three radioactivities. They also are the most deadly.
  • There are also a lot of neutrons released in nuclear fission which are used in nuclear power plants as main triggers in producing nuclear energy.

The isotope that is being fissioned, brakes down to lighter and more stable elements. Almost every nuclear reaction ends with the formation of lead (Pb).

  1. Nuclear energy
  2. fission fragments and nuclear radiation

Nuclear fission is the splitting of heavy nuclei (as U-235) when bombarded by neutrons. The nuclear fission results in loss of mass (or mass defect) that transforms into energy according to formula E = mc2 (c is light velocity). The resulting energy manifests itself as heat energy that produces steam. The steam spins the turbines that spins electric generators and hence producing electricity.

Define Q-value of a nuclear reaction?

Q- value is a deterministic factor for the possibility of nuclear reaction. it is the difference of rest masses of the product and reactant of the reaction, and if it comes positive this means some energy added for the reaction to happen, and if it comes negative then the reaction will progress with the emission of energy.
