you can get rid of medication by taking it to the doctor or maybe even throwing it away. If you are throwing away your medication, remember to remove all personal information from the bottle. (Your name, Address, Phone Number, Medication Name). You can also dissolve your medications in water, and mix them with cat litter or coffee grounds and throw them away. You should not flush your medication down the toilet, unless your medication bottle specifically says to do so.

Many pharmacies will be happy to take leftover or expired medications off your hands, for disposal. If you can't find such a pharmacy, a good idea is to crush any leftover pills, and mix them with something unpleasant (rotting garbage, kitty litter, etc.) before throwing them in the trash.

Call or visit your local fire department and ask if there is a local process for disposing of unwanted medicines. If there is no local programme, here is a suggestion:

"1. Keep in the original container. This will help identify the contents if they are accidentally ingested.

"2. Mark out your name & prescription number for safety.

"3. For pills: add some water or soda to start dissolving them; For liquids: add something inedible like cat litter or dirt

"4. Close the lid and secure with duct or packing tape

"5. Place the bottle(s) inside an opaque (non see-through) container like a detergent container.

"6. Tape that container closed.

"7. Hide the container in the trash. Do not put it in the recycle bin."

Depending upon the type of medicine, there are a number of different methods for disposal. This can be as simple as tossing the unused medicines in the trash. Some medications may come with disposal instructions, such as advising the patient to flush any unused medicine down the toilet. Some communities have medicine "take-back" programs whereby the medicines are returned to a hospital or clinic for disposal. Regardless of the method used, always be sure to scratch out completely any identifying information, including the prescription number, from the bottle being disposed of.
