The point of building a skyscraper is to get the maximum amount of usable space out of the smallest amount of land. By building a building with dozens of stories to it, the land space on which the building sits is multiplied by as many floors as the building can support. Or, put another way, if all of the floors on a skyscraper were put at ground level, the building would occupy an awful lot of space.
