Commercially made "Playdoh" can be substituted with home made play dough. One needs to be careful to use a recipe that will not mold or spoil. Pure Ammonium Alum is a salt, not a metal. It's prefered use is for deodorants and anti-perspirants instead of Aluminum Zirconium Tetrachlorohydrex Gly as it's not a metal, and does not cause as many health risks as I've seen as apposed to the Aluminum.
