Synthetic oils came about because every oil used in cars has an additive package in it to help it do it's job. Oil without these packages would only lubricate and not be very consistent as they heated. Eventually scientists figured out how to make synthetics that are less suceptible to heat and breakdown. as a result synthetics last much longer than the additive packages did and they are very consistent in viscosity throughout the temperature ranges they operate at. We started using them in jet engines back in the 1970's and it was amazing how much less wear we saw at inspection cycles.

The only drawback I have seen with them is that they are initially more expensive and, on an older engine with even minor leaks, synthetics will tend to leak as much or more from those areas.
